BECCA HAD MANAGED a few hours of sleep. She’d dreamed about Jake and the baby. He’d been pushing a stroller as they walked through a park together. The sun had been bright and warm, shining down on them. The grass and leaves gleamed. For once, they had not been fighting. They’d been talking and laughing and sharing their hopes for a future together. She had seen such love in his eyes that it had brought tears to her own.

What a total fantasy.

The harsh reality was she was on her own. As usual. It was early morning, and while it was still cool outside, and it was already warm inside the library. Once the afternoon temperature reached its peak, this building was going to become an oven.

Becca rolled onto her knees and stood.

“What are you doing?” Abigail reached out, taking her hand, urging her back down.

“I’ve got to go to the bathroom.” They all probably did, but since she’d been pregnant her bladder hadn’t quite been the same.

“Let me get their attention,” Abigail said. “I doubt they’d hit an old woman for asking. You on the other hand...” She shrugged.

Smiling, Becca gestured for her to go ahead. Not only was Abigail brave, but she was also kind.

Abigail climbed to her feet and stretched like she was stiff. She took tentative steps toward the large glass window and knocked on it. “Excuse me.” She waved at someone.

A moment later, Craig approached the room.

“We need to you use the facilities, if you don’t mind,” Abigail said.

Nodding, Craig looked back over his shoulder. “They have to go to the bathroom,” he bellowed. “Should I take them?”

“Yeah!” someone called out, presumably Gray.

Craig unlocked the door. “Women first. Then I’ll come back for you three,” he said, referring to Lund, Nolan and the Schroeder kid. He looked at Becca. “Let’s get moving.”

She stood. It was good to get up and stretch after sitting for so long, but she was keenly aware of how volatile the situation was. Craig struck her as the most dangerous.

The restroom wasn’t far, only a few feet to the left.

On the way, she asked, “Will we get any food this morning? More water?”

Morning sickness hadn’t kicked in yet, thankfully, but it would soon and then she wouldn’t be able to eat. Water was a higher priority.

Craig nudged Becca forward. “Not if it means you’ll need to keep running to the bathroom.”

“She needs water and food.” Abigail looked back at him with a supplicating expression on her face. “Because she’s pregnant. Can you find it in your hearts to give her some?”

“We all need water and food.” Becca was more concerned about the others than she was for herself. “Even those who have been tied up all night.”

“Not my call,” Craig said. “We’ll see.” He pushed open the bathroom door.

After Becca and Abigail entered, Craig followed them inside.

Stiffening in alarm, Becca turned to him. “I hope you don’t intend to watch like some pervert?”

“Maybe I do.” His eyes brightened like he was smiling under his mask.
